Risk of skin cancer and use of solariums do not have a causal relationship
Scientist criticises unfair investigation methods of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) – IARC report flawed as different skin types were not considered
Brussels, 1st April 2010 (ESA) – William B. Grant, one of the most renowned vitamin D re-searchers worldwide, has criticised the methods used by the International Agency for Re-search on Cancer (IARC) during their investigations concerning a relationship between the use of solariums and the risk of skin cancer.

To support tanning services in complying with EU legislation, the European Sunlight Association (ESA) is developing a European Code of Conduct for the tanning sector, training materials for tanning studios and organises information seminars.
Brussels, 15th of February 2010 (ESA) – The European Sunlight Association (ESA) is playing an important role in ensuring operating standards in sunbed services. In regular consultations and with support of the market surveillance officials of the “Joint Action on Sunbeds” (JAS) ESA actively promotes fast adoption of the rules and regulations in the tanning sector, including the 0.3 W/m2 limit on UV radiation emitted from sunbeds.

Sunbeds as Vitamin D sources !

Brussels, 9th October 2009 (ESA) – In order to ensure that the human body receives a balanced
level of vitamin D, sun beds should particularly be used in the winter. This recommendation
was expressed by a research group lead by professor Johan Moan from the University
of Oslo, based on a study that has now been published in the specialist magazine ‚Photochemistry
and Photobiology’. „In the winter months the Vitamin D level falls significantly, as
the sun light contains too little ultra violet light to stimulate the vitamin D production in human
skin. If you use sunbeds during this time, this interruption can be avoided and the vitamin D
level can be kept at a balanced level“, says Johan Moan.

European Sunlight Association Fights Back Hype over Tanning Beds
Brussels, 30 July 2009 (ESA) — The European Sunlight Association (ESA) condemns the hype
related to the recent categorization of tanning beds as a “Group 1” carcinogen.
“The European Sunlight Association will not stand by and allow to unfairly malign our products
and the thousands of small business owners who are our members, by grossly exaggerating the
risks associated with tanning beds,” said ESA’s chairwoman, Christina Lorenz.
“Because tanning beds produce the same UV light as the sun, OVEREXPOSURE and abuse of
our products - just like OVEREXPOSURE to sunlight - is associated with an increased risk for
some types of skin cancer. Other items in this category are red wine and salted fish. Scientific
studies suggest that drinking red wine or other alcoholic beverages carries a greater cancer risk
than tanning.
